If you're visiting San Diego, a trip to the world-renowned San Diego Zoo is a must. But before you step through the gates, here's some advice: wear comfortable shoes and apply sunscreen. You’ll be walking several miles, often uphill, so be prepared for an active day. Locals even use the zoo as a scenic spot for a workout!

The San Diego Zoo houses over 3,500 rare and endangered animals, spread across beautifully landscaped habitats. With so much to see, here are the five experiences you absolutely can’t miss:

1. Monkey Trail

The Monkey Trail is a personal favorite, and it’s easy to see why. Watching these lively creatures swing through the trees, chase each other, and perform their gravity-defying acrobatics is endlessly entertaining. If you have kids, they’ll be captivated by the monkeys' playful antics. And yes, I secretly hope to see a misstep, but they’re too good for that!

2. Tiger Trail

The Tiger Trail is a cool, shaded path that leads you to one of the zoo’s most majestic animals. Tigers are stunning creatures, and though they tend to be more relaxed, just seeing them up close is awe-inspiring. You might find them lounging, but the tranquil environment and chance to appreciate their beauty make this a worthwhile stop.

3. Hippo Trail

Following the Tiger Trail brings you to the Hippo Trail, where you can view these massive creatures through an underwater glass enclosure. It’s incredible to watch them effortlessly swim, given their size. Hippos are surprisingly graceful in the water and can hold their breath for what seems like an eternity, making this exhibit a memorable one.

4. Skyfari Aerial Tram

For a bird's-eye view of the zoo, start your day with the Skyfari Aerial Tram. This gondola ride takes you across the zoo, giving you a unique perspective on the exhibits below. From this vantage point, you can spot tigers, monkeys, and maybe even glimpse a panda. If you're afraid of heights, don’t worry—it’s a smooth and relatively quick ride, and the stunning views make it worth conquering your fear!

5. Elephant Odyssey & Urban Jungle

The Elephant Odyssey and Urban Jungle exhibits showcase some of the zoo’s largest and most iconic animals. The Elephant Odyssey offers a close-up look at these giant, gentle creatures in their massive habitat. In the Urban Jungle, you'll encounter giraffes, and you can get even closer to them than you'd expect. Seeing these animals in person will give you a newfound appreciation for their size and grace.

Bonus Tips:

  • Aviaries: If you're a bird lover, don’t miss the aviaries located in the middle of the park. Just be sure to stay alert for any unexpected “gifts” from above!
  • Reptile Pavilion: If reptiles are your thing, check out the Reptile Pavilion. Personally, I avoid it because snakes aren’t my cup of tea, but for the brave souls, it’s a must-see.
  • For Kids: The zoo offers fun and educational animal shows, and there’s even a water play area in Discovery Outpost that’s perfect for little ones to cool off and have fun.
